We’re on the hunt for a Business Outreach Specialist, someone who can reach out and build close relationships with businesses like yours, and connect you to new ideas, support tools and networks. Since this person will be one of your primary outreach contacts, working as a partner with our Business Engagement Specialist at the Chamber, who better to help us find our next rockstar than you, our members?

For 150 years the La Crosse Area Chamber of Commerce has been working daily to make the La Crosse Area a better place to live, work and grow a business. This is a rare opportunity to be part of that important work. If you like to be in the center of the action, then the Chamber is the place to be. You’ll have the opportunity to establish relationships with every business in the county from large public companies to neighborhood restaurants. The Chamber connects businesses to each other and to new ideas, helps them grow and expands their influence by meeting with government decision makers to ensure business-friendly conditions exist.
But the Chamber team is not for everyone. It’s a high-performing, innovative team that expects a lot of every team member and delivers amazing results.

The Position

  • Selling solutions to businesses in La Crosse and opportunities that support our members’ business growth
  • Supporting businesses to be more successful, and especially helping them grow, is the core mission of the Chamber of Commerce.
This sales role is part of the membership team and actively seeks out businesses to determine the right products and services that they need to support their current business challenges. The Business Outreach Specialist delivers results by closing new sales to meet and exceed sales targets which contribute to the growth of the Chamber. You are a listener, and can work collaboratively to suggest solutions to both growth-focused entrepreneurs and business advocates.

What it looks like for you

    • You will develop an action plan to target businesses that fit within the Chamber’s overall strategy and are in need of the products and services the Chamber provides. Based on your conversations with potential members, you offer recommendations to solve issues. This starts with the right membership level for their needs and can grow to include a customized advertising schedule, attendance at an upcoming event and enrollment in one of our discounted partner benefit programs.

You are plugged in to the La Crosse Area’s business scene; highly news-literate and current affairs oriented, with a finger on the pulse of key business issues. You leverage your business knowledge to relate to business owners and corporations within the county to satisfy your desire to close sales.

You never stop pushing to achieve the financial targets that support the success of the business strategy for the Chamber.
To make this happen you must seek and establish new relationships across a wide range of people and businesses.

Responsibilities

  • Seek new businesses for membership, and within the first year, connect them with advertising, sponsorships, programming and discount benefits
  • Close sales to meet monthly sales targets
  • Provide solutions and answer questions from prospects in a timely manner
  • Stay current with business trends, issues, and needs to understand how the Chamber’s value proposition can help businesses be more successful
  • Prepare sales reports on a weekly and monthly basis
  • Accurately maintain prospect and member data in our CRM / database
  • Participate in tradeshows and networking events
  • Attend and support Chamber events such as Business After Hours, ribbon cutting ceremonies and member welcome receptions
  • Surprise and delight: bring new thinking, and never-before-seen ideas to the table

Qualifications

  • Education: University degree in business, hospitality, tourism, marketing or another relevant field
  • Experience: 3-5 years of B2B sales experience, volunteer experience
  • Proven ability to close sales and meet or exceed sales targets
  • Demonstrated ability to prospect, and close the sale (even when it seemed impossible)
  • Determination to support the team, even when it seems like it is not part of the job description
  • Experience selling services and experiences
  • Entrepreneurial spirit, track record of initiatives and results, and ownership of work
  • High degree of accountability
  • Enthusiasm and a positive attitude, with the ability to maintain grace under pressure
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Flexibility to work early mornings and some evenings

A Day in the Life of Our Business Outreach Specialist
This morning you started your day by reviewing your sales goals and determining which sales activities were going to be your priority this week. You have determined that your long term sales pipeline is inadequate so you are going to focus on making ten revenue calls to get the conversation going. You consult the attendee list for the next Chamber event, and identify five non-members attending, so you begin your outreach with those individuals. You instant message the events director requesting to be assigned to sit with those guests. If you are unsuccessful in contacting them on the phone in advance, this is a great opportunity to meet personally.
Our Zoho prospecting database that integrates with social media, our website and email campaigns is a great source for leads coming in from social media, website traffic or outreach campaigns. You cross-check this list with LinkedIn to see who the leads know who you might know or be a member. These contacts may be able to open the door/warm up the lead for you and provide insight to their business.
The Business Outreach Committee is a group of volunteers who love to be out the community. Their ability to connect you with opening businesses, business changes, and more will be a lifeline.
Not every business is a correct fit for membership, so it is critical to make an initial phone call to determine if they should be added to your pipeline. One person has also sent you a note requesting information, so you open the ChamberMaster CRM to determine whether there is already a history with this company. Once you see that they attended a Chamber event a few months back, you pick up the phone for a call.
At lunch, you stop into the start of the Young Professionals monthly luncheon to touch base with business representatives as they arrive, to welcome a few members you invited and to introduce yourself to new members. The Business Engagement Specialist will likely also be present to greet existing members along with the Young Professionals team members. During the event, one of the members recommends that you speak with their marketing firm, who is not yet a member of the Chamber. You ask for them to make the warm introduction and they agree.
After lunch, you have three meetings with prospective members at their place of business. Before you go, you freshen up your knowledge on upcoming advocacy discussions and events that may be relevant for these prospective members.
Each of the businesses are diverse. One is a small human resources firm that has developed new software targeted at small businesses – they are looking for additional promotional opportunities to their target audience. Another company has approximately 250 employees and is in the tech space. They are struggling to attract qualified staff and are interested in the Chamber’s policy and business advocacy work. The final business is an accounting firm with a new partner that just took over the business. She is looking to build her networking skills and broaden her relationships within the corporate community.
Later in the afternoon, when you return from your meetings, you have messages to check. Two of the people you reached out to last week have returned your call and want to set up a meeting. The Chamber team also advises you that while you were out, the company that you had met with two weeks ago submitted their membership application online. Success! Time to follow up with a thank you card and ask for an introduction.
Tomorrow is exciting. Our Business Expo is launching and you get leads from five companies who are eager to participate as they missed the event last year.
The next day there is a meeting of a business association where you’ll connect with businesses not yet a member of our Chamber. This is always one of the best parts of the job. You’re able to support the growth of business, offer a suite of options, share your ideas and as a result, hit your sales targets and contribute to the success of the Chamber.
